Waxed Canvas Showdown: Flint and Tinder Jackets vs. Rogue Territory Supply

Northampton, England – When it comes to waxed jackets, Flint and Tinder has spent the last decade building a reputation for some of the best options on the market. Actually, most would probably say the best option on the market is their hugely influential Waxed Trucker Jacket.

After beating the game of waxed trucker jackets, where do they go? That’s what we’re looking at today: Flint and Tinder’s two newest offerings to the world of waxed canvas. What distinguishes these more modern jackets and how should you determine which is best for you? Nick, Stridewise’s founder, met up with Diego from Urban Lad to compare four jackets: the classic Waxed Trucker, the insulated York, the minimalist James, and the competitor from Rogue Territory that we couldn’t help but think of.

Flint and Tinder Wax Trucker Jacket: The Icon

We start with Huckberry’s original wax jacket, the Flint and Tinder Flannel-Lined Waxed Trucker Jacket. (What a mouthful.) It’s the jacket that put Huckberry’s waxed outerwear on the map. 

Why It Stands Out

This jacket is built with 7 oz waxed canvas, it’s flannel lined (note the flannel is polyester), and it’s made in the USA.

It comes in four colors and two fits, “Classic” and “Tall.” In years past they’ve experimented with more and fewer colors and fits. Any time a jacket has more than one fit, it’s a big bonus for the consumer.

We’ve looked at a ton of waxed canvas jackets and can confidently say that by having all those qualities and keeping the price under $300 ($298 to be exact) makes the Flannel Lined Waxed Trucker the best value waxed jacket we’ve found.

They didn’t even jack up the price after Pedro Pascal made it even more famous by wearing it in The Last of Us on HBO — but Diego and I had ours long before that hype. Because we’re so cool, you see.

Diego’s Take

“The design of this jacket is very comfortable. I wear a large, and there’s plenty of room for layering. It works in every season except winter. The weight is fantastic, and it’s a great all-around work jacket for anyone’s wardrobe. Most importantly, the balance between what you get and what you pay is incredible.”

I have to agree. After testing many waxed jackets, this is simply the one I reach for most often. It’s definitely casual — versatile isn’t the right word for it — but it makes any casual outfit look awesome.

As for the fit, it fits slim-ish but isn’t the slimmest wax jacket out there, making it a good middle-ground option. Diego and I are about the same height, and both wear large sizes, despite Diego being thirty pounds heavier.

York Jacket: Quilted and Contemporary

Next is the York Jacket, a new addition that takes waxed canvas in a different direction. With its quilted, insulated construction, this jacket is warmer than the Trucker and designed to appeal to a more modern-leaning, mainstream aesthetic. It’s a lot easier to see this worn with, say, a streetwear aesthetic than the slightly vintage looking Trucker.

Interestingly, rather than the canvas being sourced from the USA as in the Trucker, the York uses British Millerain’s canvas.

Fit Differences

The York Jacket is cut roomier than the Trucker.

Diego, who is 6’1″ and 94 kg, finds the large to be a perfect fit. For Nick (5’10”, 80 kg), the large feels slightly oversized in the body but not unwearable. He tried a medium, but the arms were too short; this is simply a roomier cut.

If you prefer a roomier, less tailored look, this is a great choice.

“This jacket is modern and functional,” says Diego. “The collar pops just enough without being too loud. It’s a fantastic option for anyone who likes waxed canvas but wants something less vintage-looking.”

James Snap Jacket: Affordable and Streetwear-Inspired

Finally, we have the James Snap Jacket, the most affordable of the three at $198. Its lighter weight and more subtle design give it a modern and minimalist feel. It’s $100 cheaper than the other two, even though the canvas is heavier at 11.9 oz versus the 7 oz for the Trucker and 8.6 oz for the York.

• No waist cinches to adjust the fit, unlike the Trucker and York.

The James Snap Jacket is slimmer than the York, but less restrictive than other slim-fit wax jackets, like the Rogue Territory Supply Jacket we’re about to discuss. It’s a practical entry-level waxed jacket that offers solid construction without breaking the bank, and the minimalist style makes it very approachable for just about anyone.

Fit Differences

Nick fit the Large just fine, while Diego had to size up. Note the contrast with how the Large size fits the other jackets, where the Trucker was fine for both and the York was roomy on Nick but ideal for Diego.

Rogue Territory Supply Jacket: The Icon

We just couldn’t discuss the James jacket — and waxed jackets in general, really — without mentioning the Rogue Territory Supply Jacket.

Worn by James Bond for a few brief but memorable seconds in No Time to Die, this jacket has since become a cultural icon.

But it has two big flaws: an unforgivingly slim fit and a lack of lining, without which one is left with the harsh reality of waxed canvas against the skin. (If you haven’t worn unlined waxed canvas, it feels damp and clammy.)

• 10 oz waxed canvas, made in the USA.
• Unlined.
• Infamously slim fit.
• Priced around $325.

The Supply Jacket is beloved for its slim and minimalist aesthetic, and this is one waxed jacket we are comfortable calling versatile. With smart chinos and an oxford cloth shirt, I once wore it to a nice steak dinner and didn’t feel too under dressed.

But its fit can be challenging. It’s designed for a slim, tailored look, leaving little room for layering or body type variations. The fit is doubly concerning given there are no waist cinches, so if you size up, the jacket’s at risk of billowing a little around the midsection if you’re slim like Nick.

Diego’s Take:
“I love the design, but the lack of lining makes it harder to wear in real life. It looks incredible, but I find myself reaching for other jackets more often because it’s just not as practical.”

For those who can nail the fit, the Supply Jacket remains one of the most stylish options on the market. However, Huckberry’s James Snap Jacket, at over $100 less, offers a similar look with a more accessible fit and added lining.

Something to note: James’ canvas is listed as 11.9 ounces, but Diego and I both agreed the Rogue Territory’s canvas feels significantly heavier. Diego imagines the difference in weight could have more to do with the wax content than the fabric’s thickness.

Final Thoughts

Waxed jackets have a special way of blending utility with character, and these Huckberry releases are no exception. Maybe you’re after a classically casual piece like the Waxed Trucker, the warmth and modern look of the York, or the minimalism of the James Snap Jacket.

Or if you can navigate the fit and plan to always wear long sleeves, you can stick with Rogue Territory. It’s pricier, but it’s American made and probably the most versatile of all the jackets here.
